Classic Action Scene: Bullitt – Car Chase

Who can forget this legendary cop movie starring Steve McQueen? This is arguably the best car chase in cinema history; no cgi, no fast cuts, just sheer driving skill. Steve McQueen’s driving skill too as I believe he liked to do all his own stunts… well nearly all. A lot of the driving was actually done by stuntman Bud Eklins.

Director Peter Yates apparently wanted speeds between 75 and 80 mph, but the cars would reach over 110 mph.
San Fransisco was a city made for car chases and all the hills, twists and turns only make it all the more thrilling. It looks great on screen and the fact that the scene still stands up today is a testament to how good it is.

Let’s not forget that Lalo Schifrin did the music too; he really was at the pinnacle of his music career in the 60s and 70s with Mission: Impossible, Dirty Harry, Enter the Dragon and more. Anyway, enough talk, more driving! Check out the classic chase scene below.
