Revisiting Deadly Target (1994)

Plot: Hong Kong police detective Charles Prince (Gary Daniels) arrives in Los Angeles to extradite a notorious Chinese gangster back to Hong Kong for trial. But soon, his suspect escapes. With the help of renegade cop Jim Jenson (Ken McLeod) and beautiful Pai Gow dealer Diana Tang (Susan Byun), Prince tracks the ruthless gangster down.

Gary Daniels was once again my in-flight entertainment as I went home for the holidays and Deadly Target was the perfect piece of 90s cheese to take my mind off how much I hate flying. It has the same plot as every other actioner from the golden age of the genre but that’s no bad thing as it has plenty of neck breaking action and Daniels in one-liner spewing action hero mode.

This is a glorious piece of PM Entertainment so we know exactly what to expect; wall to wall action, lashings of cheese and likable heroes.

Watching fight scenes from back then and how much better they were is always fascinating (and enlightening) then so many modern blockbusters; there are a lot of Hollywood filmmakers today who could learn a thing or two from watching these kinds of movies.

There are no quick/flashy close ups, the camera holds back and we watch the pros kick ass the way it should be done. Daniels shows some great moves in this movie but so does Ken McCleod (of the clan McCleod) as they reluctantly team up to taken down an escaped Chinese gangster played by the always entertaining Byron Mann.

It’s predictable stuff but there’s a warm glow of safety you get from these movies as they deliver exactly what you want from an action flick.

If you’ve never seen Deadly Target then track it down as it’s a lot of fun with plenty of face smacking action.

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it’s a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone.
